To create a Conservation Plan for the Town of Middlebury, Vermont and present the plan to the Town’s Planning Commission and Conservation Commission in a public meeting scheduled for December 9, 2021.

The plan will consist of two complementary products:

  1. A non-technical report for a general audience that combines narratives and graphics to communicate:
    • Conservation goals
    • Descriptions of past, present, and future conditions
    • Strategies to direct current conditions towards conservation goals
    • Methods to monitor, evaluate, and adapt above strategies
    • Recommendations to improve knowledge about conditions
  2. Technical documentation, combining narratives, code snippets, and images, that communicates:
    • Data acquisition
    • Replicable workflows
    • Known errors and limitations

Learning objectives

  • create a plan to protect natural and cultural heritage of Middlebury
  • analyze, evaluate, and communicate thematic and regional geographic research
  • independently set up and solve geographic problems with raster workflows
  • hone skills for writing geographic narratives of place and project documentation
  • consider ethical dilemmas of doing large-scale cartography
